How can we treasure what truly matters?

treasure what truly mattersThe world we live in is crumbling down around us! It has been one tragedy after another it seems lately. I know that has a lot to do with social media as it is more in our faces and constantly being streamed in our news feeds, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Instead of banning together we are tearing each other apart. Innocent people are being killed, those responsible for keeping us safe are being gunned down in the streets, a child dies at Disney World… “The happiest place on earth”. My heart breaks for the world. Even more so my heart breaks for lack of community I have witnessed in these past weeks. When we are going through hard times having others there to support us and show empathy can make all the difference. This seems to be lacking in today’s culture. We’ve grown accustomed to sitting behind a computer screen spewing out our opinions and feelings. With little to no thought of how they might effect another. People say the cruelest of things on social media. Things I’m sure they would never be so quick to say to anothers face.

We need to stop. We need to live lives of integrity. We need to create community among ourselves and be there to pick up the pieces of the broken hearts that are shattering around us. Life is so short. We are given but a speck of time to make a difference. Why are we wasting it?

My question to you is – How can we start to treasure what truly matters?

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, would you feel content with the life you have lived thus far? Are you at odds with anyone right now? Do you have something you need to tell someone? Is there something you’ve always dreamed of doing, but say ‘someday’? Do you work more than you play? Have you been out of the country? Have tried any exotic food? Do the people you love, know how you truly feel? If you died tomorrow, would you leave anyone wondering how you felt about them?

My encouragement to you is to live a life now that you would be okay with giving up. Live a life that if it was taken away tomorrow you would feel like you had truly lived. Like you treasured what mattered most.

Be kind. Help people. Think before you speak. Show love.

What matters most to you?

I myself am guilty of going through the motions and not always being grateful for the abundant blessings I have in this life. This is something I have been working on lately. I am trying, with the help of God to become better. To treasure each day, no matter how it goes.

I am married to an incredible man, we have a precious baby girl that has me smiling all day long. My family is everything to me.

I have the most amazing friends, my dream job, and access to as many chocolate chip cookies as I want! he he. I live in an absolutely beautiful place, have traveled more than I ever thought I could and I am saved by Gods grace.

How could I possibly ask for more? Why do I often not feel content? What is wrong with me? Why do I feel sad when I have so much to be thankful for? Feelings can be quite deceiving and get the best of us. They are constantly changing and need to be kept in check or they will overcome and rule our lives. Perspective is everything.

We can become so distracted by things that don’t truly matter. WHAT MATTERS ??? It’s not money. It’s not material objects. It’s not the tremendous amounts of drama spewing on social media. It’s not the clothes you wear or the car you drive. It’s community. It’s people. No matter your social class, the color of your skin, the religion you follow… It’s about loving one another and being kind. Simple as that. Why is this so difficult??

Today, I am praying that God would help me to be kind. To live a joyful life and to be thankful.
